US could begin withdrawing some of its troops from Niger in the coming weeks, according to US officials.
The move is part of a broader plan to reduce the US military footprint in Africa and focus more on countering China and Russia in other regions.
The US has about 800 troops in Niger, mainly supporting French and local forces in fighting Islamist militants in the Sahel region.
The officials said that the withdrawal would not affect the US drone base in Niger, which is used for surveillance and strikes across Africa.
