California cools on criminal justice reform

After a year of protests and calls for police reform in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, California voters and lawmakers seem to have lost their appetite for sweeping changes to the criminal justice system.

Several bills that would have reduced sentences, expanded parole eligibility, and restricted police use of force failed to pass in the state legislature this year.

Meanwhile, a recall effort against progressive Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is gaining momentum.
